Student Exchange Programme (SEP) Malaysia 2014

Greetings everyone! Emileen Chieng here, your Malaysian Pharmacy Students’ Association (MyPSA) Student Exchange Officer.

It is my great honour to update you all on the current SEP progress. We had just completed SEP in Malaysia which was held from 20th July to 10th August 2014. This year’s SEP was a great success as we managed to host 18 international students. We successfully break the record of hosting the most students this year! And this is just the beginning as we will try our best to increase more attachment places for the upcoming years. The incoming students came from various countries; United States of America, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Turkey, Egypt, Slovakia and Indonesia.

For the first 2 weeks, the students had their internship at their respective pharmacy setting; hospital, university research and community. For hospital pharmacy, the students did their internship at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). The students had training in ambulatory, in-patient and ward, emergency, drug information, manufacturing pharmacy and pharmaceutical logistics services. As for university research, it was conducted at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences. The Research Department was divided into Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics. For community pharmacy, it was conducted at Farmasi Mariani. Later in the afternoon, we brought the students around for a tour around Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

On 2nd August 2014, this was a meaningful day as we had a group tour using the Hop On Hop Off bus. Although it was a scorching hot day, we still managed to come together and took a lot of lovely group photos with our ‘SEP Malaysia’ shirt. Later at night, we had a dinner sponsored by our lovely Datin Mariani, our MyPSA Honorary National Advisor at the Lake Gardens. The students enjoyed the dinner and had a great talk session with our Datin Mariani and our MyPSA President, Mohamad Haziq bin Abu Othman.

For the last week, we arranged a fun vacation to Cameron Highland and Penang. The students had an awesome time, experiencing the nature’s beauty, culture, architecture and food in Malaysia. It was a great week for all the students from all the 3 different pharmacy settings to come together and had a good bonding time. It was a fruitful experience for all, both international students and local students as we all get to learn about one another’s culture and pharmacy setting all around the world.

Last but not least, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to En. Amrahi bin Buang, the Chief Pharmacist of UMMC, Prof. Dr. Rosnani Hashim, the dean of CUCMS School of Pharmacy and Datin Mariani for providing a great place for the students to learn. Thank you!

All in all, it was a life-fulfilling experience for everyone. For all the IPSF international students out there, what are you waiting for? Come and experience SEP in Malaysia! You will have the time of your life as you will not only learn the pharmacy setting here, but also build priceless memories throughout your SEP here.
